A word from St Makarios the Great

The prayer I just posted speaks of laying down the small personal life in the great cosmic life.  As I typed, I was reminded of the following quote from St Makarios the Great (c. 4th-5th centuries).  Makarios reminds us that our desires, and even our very selves, must be taken up into the fire of the Spirit, that we may (in the words of the Guild prayer) “love with the Love of God.”

Let us make our body an altar of sacrifice.  Let us place all our desires on it and beseech the Lord that he would send down from heaven that invisible and mighty fire to consume the altar and everything that is on it.  (translation from John Anthony McGuckin, The Book of Mystical Chapters, p.148)
