Reading the ongoing, depressing news about the Iraq war this morning, I found myself thinking of the visions of Ida Peerdeman (mid 20th c., the Netherlands). I became aware of her via the late Roman Catholic hermeticist Valentin Tomberg. In a vision, Mary allegedly said to Peerdeman, “The world is not saved by force. The world will be saved by the Spirit.” Of course, this echoes Zech 4:6: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord.”
During this season of Pre-Lent, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, maybe we can pray a little more earnestly for the Spirit’s renewal of the hearts and minds of all people, that we may be spared the evils of war. The following is a prayer which Peerdeman claimed to have received from Mary on February 11, 1951. (For my Roman readers, this devotion has been approved for your use by your denominational authorities – not just another one of my heresies! 🙂 )
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father,
send now your Spirit over the earth.
Let the Holy Spirit live in the hearts of all nations,
that they may be preserved from
degeneration, disaster, and war.
May the Lady of All Nations, who once was Mary,
be our Advocate.
