As usual, the Rev Mario Schoenmaker is lacking in nuance and tact, but nonetheless helpfully provocative. This is from a lecture given in 1996, toward the end of his life:
You cannot embrace occultism or esoteric teachings for the sake of elevating your own ego. That is why we cannot advertise courses that say: “To grow in consciousness or to grow in whatever.” You don’t do that because you are only asking people to show their egos. To improve yourself. What the hell does that achieve? That you may make more money, live happily in your relationship, that you may be able to handle your children, that you may have a good business, that you may have, may have, may have. That is what we mean by improving yourself. Christ never talks about improving yourself. He talks about a new birth.
